Prophetic Intercession: What To Do When You Hear God Speak

Prayer should be a dialogue a conversation between friends--us and our Father not a monologue. Although God is no "chatterbox " He does speak to us at times. Knowing how to discern His voice from the other voices in our minds isn't always easy. Some years ago there was a prophetic intercessor (a praying Christian who tends to hear God's voice more readily than some) who would attend public events in torn clothes with ashes on her face (sack cloth and ashes). She acted as though God spoke exclusively to her. Frankly she was more pathetic than prophetic.

 

It's true we see powerful examples of prophetic ministers as voices crying out in the wilderness in Scripture but how do we reconcile then and now? God spoke through His prophets then through His Son and now through us with His Word and His Spirit. But prophetically gifted individuals (Rom 12; 1 Cor 12; and Eph 4) are designed to occasionally receive His words and deliver them to others. Where are they to receive their equipping/training? Undisciplined ill-equipped prophetic intercessors, with little accountability, can quickly do more Kingdom harm than good. There are few people who have worked with more intercessors in the trenches as has Alice Smith.
